There are many ways that you can get involved in RADAR, you can volunteer, become a member, sign up as a foster carer, adopt an animal in need or donate.

Fostering

We always require Foster Carers for rescue animals that are in temporary care waiting for new homes. Foster carers are required to responsibly care for the animals, treating them as they would their own pets. Rescue animals need to be suitably housed, fed, socialised and cared for in your home.

Animals in care take, on average, about 4 weeks to find a new forever home, but it can take longer at times.

Most animals need to be in care around 4 weeks to be processed, and ready to go to their new home.

Processing involves giving the animal a flea bath and checking for any other parasites like ticks and mites. If any are found appropriate treatment is to be administered. Next, the animal is wormed and put onto a good healthy diet.

The animal must be microchipped, vaccinated and desexed prior to re-homing but the carer doesn’t need to be out of pocket for these expenses, as they will be paid by RADAR at participating vets.

All animals are chipped to the person fostering them, with mention of RADAR Inc as the Organisation. It is important to note that vaccinations need 14 days to build up the animal’s immunity so during that time it is best to keep the animal in a safe area. Any vet work must be booked through the Booking Officer. Adoption fees are in all cases paid to RADAR Inc.'s bank account.

The carer also helps to assess the animal’s health and temperament and spends time getting to know the animals personality. The carer may need to liaise with other RADAR members to advertise the animal for adoption. If there are any concerns regarding behavioural problems you will need to contact experienced carers for advice. Support is given to the carer in every way possible.

It would be an advantage if you have previous pet care skills and understand the ethics of a rescue organization and have made yourself familiar with the policies and procedures of RADAR Inc. If you don't know just ask!

Foster care is a great way to try an animal before you adopt one yourself, and it is a great way to have a pet short term. They are great company for people that are alone, families, retiree’s etc. Also they can make a great temporarily playmate for your existing pet particularly if it is lonely and you want to see if a second pet will help your existing pet cope.

Rescuing and fostering a pet is a most rewarding experience, as you get to see animals young and old, in good and poor health, from neglected or sad situations unwanted or on death row, turn around in your care and blossom and then go off to their new forever homes making them and their new families happy. You often will receive a follow up email or phone call and may receive photos after adoption showing how the animal has grown or blossomed and how happy they all are and what some have achieved.

Transporting

RADAR animals are adopted out all over Australia. The further away the more inclined the new owners are to fly the animals to them. Of course planes don’t always leave at a time that is convenient for a foster carer, so help is needed to get animals to airports, and ensure they are loaded correctly. Help is also needed to meet road transport carriers, to rendezvous with new adopters, or even to deliver animals in some cases.

Transport is always an issue and we need volunteers to help drive animals in every direction. Please register your interest in helping out in this manner when applying for membership, and watch our facebook page for transport assistance requests

Fundraising

RADAR understands that you may be sympathetic and passionate to the cause but circumstances prevent you from being able to foster an animal. Thankfully we have many other ways in which you can help. Fundraising is a great way to get involved and help the organisation.

We are always in need of volunteers to help at events and fundraisers. If you’re really interested you can even join our fundraising committee.
